Review: Fins Are Forever

Title: Fins Are Forever
Author: Tera Lynn Childs
Series: Fins #2
Publisher: Harper Collins
Published: June 28th 2011

On Lily Sanderson’s eighteenth birthday she’ll become just a girl—still a mergirl, true, but signing the renunciation will ink Princess Waterlily of Thalassinia out of existence. That leaves plain old Lily living on land, dating the boy she loves, and trying to master this being-human thing once and for all. Now that Lily and Quince are together, mer bond or not, she’s almost content to give up her place in the royal succession of Thalassinia. But just when she thinks she has everything figured out, the waves start to get rough. Lily’s father sends a certain whirlpool-stirring cousin to stay with her on land. What did Doe do to get herself exiled from Thalassinia and stuck in terraped form when everyone knows how much she hates humans? And why why why is she batting her eyelashes at Lily’s former crush, Brody. The seafoam on the raging surf comes when a merboy from Lily’s past shows up—Tellin asks Lily for something that clouds her view of the horizon. There’s a future with Quince on land, her loyalty to the kingdom in the sea, and Lily tossing on the waves in the middle. Will she find a way to reconcile her love, her duty, and her own dreams?

After a big earthquake hits the city, Lily's human-hating cousin, Dosinia, comes to stay. The King has exiled her from his kingdom and ordered that she only return after Lily can see that she appreciates humans. While Lily would love nothing more than to send the nuisance back immediately, she's determined to successfully complete her last duty as the Princess of Thalassinia. When she turns eighteen she'll sign away her rights to the throne so that she can live a perfectly normal and human life with her boyfriend on land. That's the plan anyway. But since when do things ever go accordingly?

Continuing on shortly after where Forgive My Fins left off, Lily and Quince are still adorable, revelling in their newfound status as a real couple. Quince is finally able to show the affection he's been hiding for years and Lily can't get enough of her human! While she chooses to stay on land with Quince, he's unfortunately unaware that she's resigning as the future Queen by doing so. Let's just say problems are not too far ahead! Fins Are Forever deals with the sacrifices we make for the ones we love and how we can be caught between two sides we desperately want to please. When Quince discovers what she's planned, the two begin fighting with neither willing to budge. She wants to be with him no matter what. He won't let her give up her title because she'll be a fantastic Queen with her strong but caring personality. How will things end happily?

When Tellin, a royal prince who's an old friend, appears and asks for her assistance, Lily's caught between a rock and a hard place. As a reader I could see both sides of the argument but had no idea which side to be on! With Tellin, the two could rule their kingdoms without any romantic feelings between them, but that would mean leaving Quince behind on land. I refuse to spoil how things end but it's one "uh-oh" scene after another!

I love this series and was very pleased with how Childs resolved the complications. How lucky are we to get a third book? I'm so excited to see how Lily deals with the big issues that are awaiting her in Just For Fins! I've marked my calendar, have you?

The third book sounds like it'll be the best yet. So much action to look forward to! :)

Sorry if the review sucks. I read this series late-November before and on the plane so...details are a bit fuzzy.
