Review: Born at Midnight

Title: Born at Midnight
Author: C.C. Hunter
Series: Shadow Falls #1
Publisher: Pan Macmillan Australia
Published: 1st July 2011

One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever.  Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.”  Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world. Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either.  Or does she?  They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason.  As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas.  Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past.  Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart. Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…

If you look under "entertaining" in the dictionary, you'll find Born At Midnight printed in big letters. The idea of a supernatural teen camp is so intriguing and Hunter definitely follows through with her brilliant concept. You'll fall in love with the characters and their abilities so...come join me as a big swooning mess?

Kylie's parents are divorcing, her jerk boyfriend's dumped her for someone else and she has a crazy stalker no one else can see. Things can't get any worse, right? After being caught at an unsupervised party, Kylie's therapist tells her mother to send her to a "camp for delinquents". I think we all know what comes next. Kylie begins an exciting journey at Shadow Falls Camp, learning more about herself than she ever would've thought possible. This will be just as much a learning experience for readers as it will be for Kylie. You'll have the time of your life and wish you were a little wrong in the head yourself!

Kylie is a brilliant narrator. She's hilarious in typical teenage fashion. She forms lasting friendships, has issues with her parents (but rightfully so!) and meets two boys she just can't resist. They're both amazing in their own way and I honestly can't decide between them. I can't imagine how Kylie will! Pick a name from a hat? Eenie meenie miney mo? Close her eyes and point? I'm dreading decision time! Derek is the sweetest and most persistent half-fae on the planet and Lucas is a seductive werewolf with an undeniable soft spot for Kylie. Lucas' past with Kylie is quite shocking but you'll have fun peeling back his layers and seeing what's really underneath!

The mythology and mystery in this book are great. All of the students have a unique ability and all were born at midnight. *ghost noises* Shadow Falls Camp was originally formed so that the different races could learn to cooperate with each other. I loved seeing them all interact, sometimes as best friends and sometimes as enemies… Old habits die hard! What's my favourite character, you ask? Perry, the most talented and obnoxiously flirtatious shapeshifter in the world. He turns into a unicorn…he turns into a cute kitten to cuddle up to Kylie's breasts…need I go on?

The ending of Born At Midnight left me with so much hope. The sequel will be amazing, thanks to some interesting developments, and I can't wait to explore! The friendships are heartwarming, the mysteries slightly bloodcurdling, the romance smoking and the plot magical. What else could you possibly want or need?!

Was this a fantastic book or what? Cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel! I know it's out in America already...Australian date is pending...
