Review: Half Blood

Title: Half Blood
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: Covenant #1
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi pure-bloods have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.
Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1: Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

If you enjoyed the prequel, Daimon, or even if you didn't, Jennifer Armentrout does not disappoint with this brilliant new series. The novel begins mid-action, as prequel readers will know, and we're immediately thrust into an exciting and perilous world, filled with scary, hollow-eyed daimons. After her mother's murder, Lexie finds herself on a frantic runaway from vicious killers before being rescued by those from the Covenant, her previous home before she was mysteriously taken by her mother to live with the mortals. Reasons for this move are not known until well into the novel as it becomes a central part of the series' plot.

Jennifer has created a new world, filled with fighting, evil and many strong characters. There are a few personalities that you will fall in love with/love to hate immediately but the standout is Aiden St. Delphi, a very skilled and very good looking Sentinel who is three years Lexie's senior. The two have a complicated and passionate, yet understanding, relationship and it has excellent build up. Did you read the summary? Pures + Halves = Absolute disaster. This is half of the excitement because unlike many other novels, Half Blood follows through and constantly reiterates this "wrongness". That, of course, doesn't stop anyone from admiring the gorgeous fire-wielder. Forbidden love? Bring it on!

At times, the novel is predictable (in terms of the direction the series as a whole is going) but like most books, you don't stay for the mind blowing twists but to see what the author does with the storyline and characters. Half Blood is so complete in its great pacing, developed characters and balance between mythology, romance and action. I must add, the action sequences are written brilliantly and you'll probably find yourself imagining it in detail!

This novel is a must-read. I recommend reading the prequel first for the complete experience but it's not necessary. The steamy romance and frightening mystery puts this up in my favourites and I'm certain that everyone else will enjoy this as much as I did. I'm already itching for the sequel, Pure! Who's with me?
