How do you defy destiny? Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is—no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it's getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history. As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart.
Starcrossed takes unattainable the the next level. Helen and Lucas are two teenagers, blessed with godly abilities, who are cursed to hate each other from birth. When Helen first sees Lucas in school, she is shocked to find herself admiring his beauty one moment and with her hands around his neck in the next. She feels pure rage around the boy she's never met and cannot figure out why. The two are pulled back and forth, through the good and bad, as they uncover secrets and mysteries, each more shocking than the last.
Greek mythology has always fascinated me so I loved seeing this being explored and modernised in the novel. While Starcrossed isn't a retelling of the Greek myths, they are somewhat of a framework and provide you with a richer understanding of the story that Angelini is trying to tell. Lucas and Helen are bound to their ancestry and do everything possible to fight their fates. Someone is also trying to kill Helen and with this, she uncovers powers she never knew she possessed. It was very exciting to watch her discover and learn how to use these so I look forward to seeing more!
The characters all had their own little traits which made them likeable individually and very dynamic as a group. The personalities of the Delos family compliment each other and the members all have important roles to play. I do wish that there had been some more character development, not only in the secondary characters but the two mains as well, so I really hope that's improved on in the next book. Lucas is gorgeous, intelligent, protective and caring. He is in many aww-inducing moments and you can't help but love him. He tries to be a gentleman and to do the right thing but for the most part, Helen doesn't help him out and instead tries her hardest to tempt him. *wink wink* I found Helen to be a great main character because of her inner-strength and wit, but sometimes she stopped and went back to being a normal girl…one who's immature and upset about a boy when people's lives are at risk! Nonetheless, the struggles between Lucas and Helen were great to read and they really put you on an emotional rollercoaster.
As I said before, the plot is fascinating because of the incorporated mythology. The novel is fast-paced and always changing, though there were a few plotlines that I felt deserved more exploring. Also, the mythology was a tiny bit confusing at times but that is also very minor issue. Starcrossed ends at a "calm" place but leaves us wanting more. Immediate problems are solved in this novel but obviously, many more are left to be dealt with in the next book. If you're a fan of dark mystery, action and mythology-ruled forbidden love then this one's for you! Very much looking forward to Dreamless!
